Dog Potty Training - The Basics of Teaching Control

Potty training usually begins early with puppies. Unfortunately, there are a lot of dogs who do not know yet where and when it is permitted. While there have been several popular housetraining available for years, many people still have pets that are not properly housetrained.

The biggest benefit of being housetrained is that you could trust your dog not to make your house a disgusting mess.

Like most dog training techniques, potty training requires the following steps for effective results.

The Timing

The dog must be ready for training. Obviously, potty training is not possible at all times. The best time to correct misbehavior is right it happens. If you see the dog pooping, instantly get their attention and encourage them to continue outside.

Give a command that signals STOP, keeping your voice tone low and unthreatening. Then introduce the the command OUTSIDE  and gently guide them to an outside location where he is regularly allowed to go potty.

The Act

Most of the time, owners just discover the accident indoors without witnessing the behavior In this case, it is best to ignore the incident and wait for the next incident. Never rub his nose in it as this would not teach him the correct behavior. Why? The dog will never be able to connect their action and your scolding, even if only several moments have passed.

If he is chewing a bone for example, and you scold him for pooping inside the house earlier, he would think that he is being scolded for chewing the bone not for eliminating indoors.

The Accompaniment

There are instances when the owner sees the dog eliminating indoors and was ordered to go outside and came back in and continued pooping. Again, in this case, the puppy has done nothing wrong. He does not know what the owner wants to communicate by going outside.

If you want the dog to accomplish as you say, you should have the patience to accompany him outside and teach him further. This could be made easier by using a leash for better control of the dog.

The Command

Effective training uses commands that communicate with the dog. However the main problem in here is the use of the words. What people do not understand is that the dog simply cannot comprehend the meanings of words if not introduced to him well.

Dog potty training required the trainer to teach the meaning of the commands in order to achieve good results. For example, you could begin with the word OUTSIDE to send him the signal that he should go outside. Then it could be followed by the words GO POTTY to make him understand that it is time to do their business.

Whatever happens, never fail to praise your dog (in return for proper behavior) or correct them for not responding to the commands. Consistent repetition conditions their thought processes so that they understand OUTSIDE and GO POTTY when you command them go out of the house to poop.
