Dog Obedience Training - Part One
Getting frustrated that your dog jumps up on people when you are visiting friends? Can’t understand why your dog runs away from you at the park while everyone else’s dog happily comes back? The simple answer is it’s time for some dog obedience training.
Basic dog obedience training involves teaching your dog to sit, stay and come. These basic commands are invaluable in your dog’s day-to-day life and also establish a solid foundation for his future training.
Before you get started, keep in mind that the biggest challenge with any form of dog training is keeping your dog’s attention. So you’ll want to make sure that while you’re working with him, you’re away from distractions such as toys, other people, dogs, noise, anything that might draw his attention away from the training.
Let’s start with sit. Tell him, “Sit.” Say this single word only. Say it firmly but nicely, and while you’re doing this, place your hand on his backside and gently guide his bottom down. Once he’s in the sitting position, repeat the command, tell him he’s a good boy, then award him with a treat. Repeat this over and over again until he makes the connection between the command and the action and the treat. It won’t take long before he’ll sit the moment you tell him and the treats will no longer be necessary.
We’ll address the “stay” and “come” commands in our next post.
